SUDRA

 Belonging to the menial caste who are supposed to serve people of all other castes, Sudra, according to the doctrine of caste system, originated from the feet of the Bramha, the Creator.


SUDDHODANA

The learned king of Kapilvastu more than 2500?? years ago Suddhodana was the father of Lord Gautam Buddha. Known for his benevolence and compassion as well, he was, unlike hereditary kings, an elected king as that was the practice in his kingdom. He did his best to please his son to have him stayed at home in which he could not be successful, but he did not slightly hesitate to pay homage to his own son, on his return as the Buddha. 


STUPA

 Stupa is a category or type of the temple or the shrine of the Buddha. There are small and big stupas. The famous big stupas believed to have constructed by Emperor Ashok of India are lying in four important corner of Patan or Lalitpur city. These stupas are known as Ashok Stupas


SOMA

 Soma is the moon or the moon god who is commonly regarded as the son of a great sage named Atri. His paternity is given sometime to other persons also. According to one version Soma is produced from the churning of the ocean. According to the Puranas, Soma rides on a chariot with three wheels and drawn by ten white horses. Where he is represent as a Kshetriya Soma is said to have 27 wives who represent 27 lunar asterism. All of them were the daughters of Dakshya Prajapati, but Soma gave special importance and love to one of them. Rohini by name. All other jealous wives of him reported to their father Dakshya about it who, in a quick temper, cursed the son-in-law to be gradually consumed till the end. At this his daughters became worried and entreated their father to take back that curse which he could not exactly do so, but he made his curse only for temporary periods, hence the variations in the size of the moon every fortnight. 

Soma is also the name of a sacred plant from which a kind of juice is produced to be drunk by Bramhins and the gods. That plant is personified as the deity who gives all powerful drinks which can heal all diseases and provide riches and happiness etc. Known also as the king of juice is extracted. After fermenting it, a beverage is formed which is offered to the deities. 


SOLOKHUMBU

 This district is the favourite and famous destination of the Mount Everest expedition lovers. Mount Everest is also in this district. The Thyangboche monastry at an altitude of 13,000 ft. from sea level, the famous Namche bazar, the base camp at an altitude of 18,000 ft and the highest placed village of the mankind at an altitude of 15,000 ft known as Pangboche are all in this district. The everst hotel at 13,000 and the airport of Sangboche nearby are all in the recorded highest destinations of the world. Salleri is the capital of this district. 


Sithi

 The term Sithi, though very much considered as a Newari term these days, has actually Sanskrit origin. Its correct form is Sasthi which in Sanskrit means 6th day of the fortnight. As this  auspicious day is associated with the six-headed god Kumar, the elder son of Lord Shiva, it has its own interpretation as six senses.  Whenever one becomes capable enough to control all these six senses and set them to work harmoniously he is sure to have an easy access to the realization of God. Kumara. The six heads of Kumar has six distinctive names as well suuch as Kartikeya, Gangeya, Skanda Sarvanabha, Sadanana, and Subrahmanya. As a matter of fact, he has many other names and forms, but the above six names attribute to his charisteristics. His   most commonly used name, however, is Kumar. 

According to Prranic version, Kumar was born form the effulgent eye of Lord Shiva. Hence he is the eternal child of divine light and love. Kumar is also worshipped as the incarnate wisdom of all ages and  the bright  spiritual brilliance for ever. He is also a holder of Trinity being symbolic of all three natural qualities known as Sattwik or creative, Rajasik or preservative and Tamasik or destructive. He is therefore an embodiment of Truth, Beauty and Goodness all three aspects of divinity in one. 

The colourful procession of Sithi Dyo (Kumar) begins when the miniature statue of Sithi Dyo is enshrined in a nicely decorated man-borne chariot which is to be carried out through the main thoroughfare of the town. The ceremonial procession actually starts from Nhugah Bahal near Jaisidewal, Kathmandu . This deity becomes the main attraction throughout the festival.

Kumar appears to have developed good link with the agricultural life and gained high popularity among the farmers. His association with water spirits seems to have originated from the Ganga or the Gangeya theme. This may be the origin of the old custom of this country to clean the neighbourhood pods, pools and wells on the Sithi Day. 

This festival marks the  end of the entire chain of the festivals which begin with the first festival known as Gathe Mangal in the month of Shrawan (July). This days is also regarded as the Daughter’s day. 


SITHI NAKHA

Sithi Nakha, a festival observed on the sixth day of lunar calendar (some time in May), is considered the birth day of Kumar, son of Mahadev. People of various parts of the kingdom prepare some kinds of special food stuffs and make an offering to God Kumar. They themselves also enjoy with these dishes. The next day Kumar is taken to a procession accompanied by people playing musical instruments, to the streets of Kathmandu, the starting point being Hanuman Dhoka, the Old Palace. Kumar the God of War has a peacock as his conveyance and thus found seated on a peacock while taken in this procession. This day is also observed as a day of cleanliness, generally regarding wells and springs (resources of drinking water is the past and also in the present times in most of the villages of Nepal) drainage, private courtyards and other places of public interest. 


SITA

 An ideal woman, wise, tolerant and all virtuous, Sita was the daughter of King Janak and consort of Rama. She participated equally in happiness and in tortures that came across the life span of her husband, Rama. A prominent figure in Ramayana. She had shown her all best virtues at several trials and at last even sacrificed her own life for the relief of her husband. see Ramayana.


SIRAHA

 This is one of the districts of Sagarmatha zone. This districts is in the terai belt of Nepal with Indo-Aryan ethnic groups living here predominantly. Many other ethnic groups are also living together in this district forming a dynamics of mixed and integrated society. Population of this district is 572399.


SINGH, GANESH MAN

 Linked with various fictitious and real stories of astounding bravery, Ganesh Man Singh was one of the prominent leaders of the revolution of 1950 which brought an end to the family autocracy of Ranas. With a long history of leadership, fighting, torture and imprisonment, he took over the leadership of another epoch making revolution of 1990 which demolished panchayat system and restored parliamentary democracy in Nepal.  He then became the common, unique and topmost  leader of all parties and became the father of democracy. Often tortured and beaten up almost to the points of death, he survived to become the minister of Government of Nepal at several occasions and undertake multiple leadership role in the process of reconstruction of the country. He is also known as the iron man of Nepal.
