SOMA

Soma is the moon or the moon god who is commonly regarded as the son of a great sage named Atri. His paternity is given sometime to other persons also. According to one version Soma is produced from the churning of the ocean. According to the Puranas, Soma rides on a chariot with three wheels and drawn by ten white horses. Where he is represent as a Kshetriya Soma is said to have 27 wives who represent 27 lunar asterism. All of them were the daughters of Dakshya Prajapati, but Soma gave special importance and love to one of them. Rohini by name. All other jealous wives of him reported to their father Dakshya about it who, in a quick temper, cursed the son-in-law to be gradually consumed till the end. At this his daughters became worried and entreated their father to take back that curse which he could not exactly do so, but he made his curse only for temporary periods, hence the variations in the size of the moon every fortnight.

Soma is also the name of a sacred plant from which a kind of juice is produced to be drunk by Bramhins and the gods. That plant is personified as the deity who gives all powerful drinks which can heal all diseases and provide riches and happiness etc. Known also as the king of juice is extracted. After fermenting it, a beverage is formed which is offered to the deities.
