Brother of Rama or Ram Chandra, Bharat was put to the throne of Ayodhya after Rama was exiled for 14 years. Although Bharat was born of one of the step-mothers of Rama, he was extremely devoted to his elder brother Ram and was not at all willing to become the king of Ayodhya in place of Ram. However, because of the insistence and tricks of his mother Kaikeyi, King Dasaratha was compelled to offer him the throne after his demise. After the death of  King Dasaratha, he, therefore, was compelled to rule the kingdom of Ayodhya which he did in the name of his brother Rama by placing his (Rama’s) shoe on the throne instead of himself sitting in the throne.
