This is a famous district of Janakpur zone. Janakpurdham is the capital city of this district. The name of the zone has been derived from this historic town. It is believed that Sita or Janaki, the spouse of the legendary Rama of Ramayana, was born here. Her father was King Janak and the kingdom itself was known as Janakpur. A famous Janaki temple of this district is a national heritage and a great attraction for pilgrims and tourists alike. This district is also the centre of Maithili language, culture, and for that matter, Maithili civilization. Population of this district is approximately 671,364.
