Kathmandu, July 2: Women leaders of various political parties have called for keeping a provision in the new constitution that ensures issuing the citizenship in the name of father or mother on the basis of descent.
They cited that the preliminary draft has the provision of issuing the citizenship in the name of ‘father and mother’, which according to them was discriminatory to the women.
Speaking in a face to face programme organized by Reporters' Club today, Nepali Congress leader Sujata Koirala said that the citizenship should be issued in the name of father or mother as such provision was adopted in 120 countries.
Similarly, Deputy Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar reiterated for the same as it helps to establish women rights at the local level too.
CPN (UML) leader Tham Maya Thapa pointed out the need of fighting for more rights for the women in the new constitution. She added that the existing Women Commission should be upgraded as a constitutional commission.
Similarly, UCPN (Maoist) leader Hishila Yami said that the 33 per cent women representation should be adopted even in the Council of Ministers.
On the occasion, women rights activists Sapana Pradhan Malla and Anuradha Koirala also spoke for upholding the women rights. RSS
