Lack of skilled manpower to operate fire engine at Madhyapur Municipality

Bhaktapur, June 9: The only fire engine at the Madhyapur Thimi Municipality remains idle as the municipality could not manage skilled manpower to operate the fire engine service.

The Municipality purchased the fire engine with a capacity of 5,000 litres at Rs 6.6 million on August 2014 in line with the Local Self-Governance Act's provision which states that every municipality should have a fire engine.

"We have written the Ministry of Local Development to manage the necessary manpower to run the service and it would be started once the Ministry makes necessary arrangements for that," said Senior Legal Officer and Information Officer at the Municipality, Keshav Silwal.

The Municipality needs at least 10 staffs including two drivers and firemen to run the fire service, he added. The income of the municipality could not support the financial burden for additional staffs at the current situation, Silwal said. RSS
